Floorplan

March 29, 2007

Here’s the floorplan for the house. The footprint for the house will be about 42′ wide by 32′ deep and the garage will be 25′ wide by 30′ deep. The total indoor living space (not including garage and porches/decks) will be about 3,500 square feet. We’ve made some minor changes to the floorplan, but this gives a sense of how the house will be laid out.

We’ve officially started!!

March 29, 2007

Since there’s heavy yellow machinery digging up the lot in search of China, we’ve officially started on the house! Yippee! So far they’ve cleared out about 15 truckloads of dirt but still have some grading to do before they start building the forms for the retaining walls and for the crawlspace.

More modern homes in Home Park

March 21, 2007

Our neighborhood, Home Park, on the west side of midtown in Atlanta has many run-down little bungalows that have long past served their purpose of rentable housing for Georgia Tech students. Some are kept in good condition, but many are not. The process of revitalization is quickly taking over as decrepit houses are torn down and new, much nicer ones built at an increasing pace. With its central location in Atlanta and proximity to Atlantic Station and Georgia Tech, Home Park is just ripe for development.

For instance, a few streets over from us in Home Park, six new modern homes are taking the place of older homes. Check out the houses at http://castlerockintown.com/ They will have excellent midtown skyline views but the price tag of $1.3 million may limit that view to those with the largest wallets.

Also, diagonally from our lot, an architect built a modern house on a skinny little lot next to a bunch of shotgun houses. His three-story house (see http://www.zaitsev.com/) has fantastic views of the downtown skyline. Home Park seems to be becoming a neighborhood with many modern homes.

Starting grading on Monday

March 21, 2007

We met with our architect last night. We’ll be starting grading of the lot on Monday. Apparently they’ll need to excavate ten truckloads of dirt from the lot. Wow! We had no idea that our lot was that sloped.

One of the first things we need to decide is what we’d like the exterior to look like. Since so many of our windows will be custom ordered, we need to decide what we’d like them to look like soon. But that depends on what we do the exterior in, so we’re back to trying to figure out what finish materials to use for the exterior of the house. We’re looking into some type of metal paired with a stucco, hardi-panel, cement board, or perhaps cedar slats. Any suggestions?

Yippee!!! We got a building permit!

That pretty much says it all. Persistence pays off. We’re finally going to get to build our house. Yeah!
