Short hiatus

May 23, 2007

We’re on a short hiatus this week from further construction. The framers assigned to complete the third floor and roof framing showed up and decided the job was far too complicated for their level of expertise. Our roof will be different from most houses since it slopes in only one direction and the flat roof of the garage completely threw them off. Plus the upper decks and required framing to make those work didn’t do it for them. So we’ll start again next week with a more experienced framing crew. We’re not too thrilled about the delay, but appreciate their honesty in lieu of the complications that could have arisen had they decided to do the job anyway. This delay will probably save us time and expense in the long run.

Interior views

May 19, 2007

The bottom floor is fully framed. Here’s a view from where the kitchen will be towards the front door. You can see where the living room will be as well to the right of the photo.

This is a photo of the two large windows facing the street. Each of these are about 10 feet tall. There are also three that go down the side of the house so the living room will be very bright.

Here’s an updated view from the outside. The second floor framing is now underway.

Move in by Oct 1st

May 18, 2007

If all goes according to the planned schedule (which, of course, we know it won’t), we should be able to move in by October 1st. So far things have gone smoothly except the eight month delay caused by an accidental rezoning of Home Park by our city councilmember Ivory Lee Young that we had to have corrected by the City Council before we could get a building permit. That gives us about four and a half months to complete the house.

First floor framing is almost done

May 13, 2007

The first floor framing is almost done. Here’s an image of the dining/living room area which will have 20 foot ceilings. Here’s Kyle with my parents.

From the street, you can begin to get a sense of the size the house will be. We haven’t started framing the garage yet which will be to the right of the house.

Multi-talented

May 11, 2007

I decided to help out a bit with the construction and framed the 1st floor bathroom and pantry area while I was at it.

The floor is down:

And we have a solitary exterior wall up on the south side of the house where the kitchen will be. Considering Kyle is 6′2″, our ceilings will be high:

We’re happy about our wall!

In this photo you can see the first floor framing. The first floor will be about five feet above the ground with the crawlspace below it.
